520 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of people employed in the Department of Equality and Law Reform for each of the years from 1992 to June 1997; the number of personnel transferred from the Department of Equality and Law Reform to the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14863/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 519 and 520 together.

The Department of Equality and Law Reform was set up in January 1993. The numbers of staff employed in that Department during the period 1993 to end June 1997 were as follows:

Staff

31.12.1993

59

31.12.1994

61

31.12.1995

64

31.12.1996

65

30.06.1997

61

These figures are in respect of the former Department of Equality and Law Reform only and do not include staff employed in the Employment Equality Agency, the Family Mediation Service or the Legal Aid Board.
Under Orders made by the Government on 8 July 1997 all the staff of the former Department of Equality and Law Reform became part of the staff of the new Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
