Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Tony Gregory

Question:

577 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the reason the bills of quantities have not been approved to enable the tender to be advertised on schedule for the proposed community college in Seán McDermott Street, Dublin 1. [14550/97]

The City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee has recently been given approval to prepare Stage 5 - (Bill of Quantities) of the architectural design process for the proposed new Inner City Community College project.

It is intended that this stage will be completed and tendering procedure initiated before the end of this year.

It is expected that construction will start in the first quarter of 1998.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

580 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education when work will commence on the new secondary community school in Trim, County Meath; if work will commence before September 1997; when the school will be ready for occupation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14558/97]

The design team for the new community school in Trim has been appointed and a technical meeting is due to take place in the Department on 3 October 1997. The purpose of this meeting is to advance the architectural planning of the project.

At this stage, it is not possible to say when work will start on site. However, no construction work is scheduled to take place in 1997.

A decision on the inclusion of projects in the 1998 capital programme will be taken later this year. This decision will be based on the amount of capital available, the existing level of capital commitments and the degree of priority accorded to a substantial number of second level building projects being planned at present, including Trim community school.
I can assure the Deputy that every effort will be made to expedite each stage of the architectural process.

Michael Bell

Question:

581 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, made to date in relation to the proposed new vocational education committee college for the north side of Drogheda, County Louth; when work will commence; the change, if any, there has been in the plans as sanctioned by his predecessor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14559/97]

Architectural planning of the replacement school for St. Laurence's vocational school is proceeding. The Town of Drogheda Vocational Educational Committee has been given approval to prepare Stage 3 - (Developed Sketch Scheme) of my Departments design team procedures.

The question of commencing construction of this project will not arise until the architectural planning process has been successfully completed.

Tony Gregory

Question:

582 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if he will review the decision to refuse to pay the college fees of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 9. [14568/97]

Officials of my Deparment have been in contact with Dublin Corporation, the awarding authority in this case under the higher education grants scheme. The corporation are assessing the eligibility of the student to have his fees paid under the grant scheme. The indications from the corporation are that he may be eligible for such funding.
