Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - RTC Staffing.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

596 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the certificate in computing course in Tallaght Regional Technical College has been cancelled in 1997 due to the unavailability of staff; his views on this matter in relation to the nature of the course; if he will contact the college with a view to rectifying the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14778/97]

I am very concerned with the difficulties which have arisen regarding the staffing of the part-time evening programmes in regional technical college Tallaght. Officials from my Department have met with the college authorities twice in the last week to explore possible ways of ensuring the delivery of the part-time evening certificate course in computing. My officials have also met representatives of the students affected.

The college has offered a transfer to its day-time course to those students in a position to avail of this and I understand that a number of the students have accepted this offer. The college will also be making arrangements to offer a limited number of modules this semester to the remainder of the students on this course.

My Department is maintaining close contact with the college authorities to assist in finding a resolution to the problems affecting the part-time evening programmes.
