Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Higher Education Grants.

Noel Ahern

Question:

612 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the procedure and necessary data required from a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 who is applying for a third-level grant for a university in a continental country; if his Department has a list of approved colleges and courses; if he will expedite this case in view of the fact that it would seem only just and correct that approval be available before travel is undertaken. [14987/97]

Under the terms of the higher education grants scheme, students following full-time approved undergraduate courses of at least two years duration in another EU member state are eligible for means tested maintenance grants. The course must be followed in a university or third level institution which is maintained or assisted by recurrent grants from public funds. Due to the number of institutions and the wide range of courses involved, it would not be feasible to publish a list of all the approved colleges and courses.

In the case referred to by the Deputy, the Department has confirmed with Dublin Corporation that the college in question is an approved third level institution and it is understood that Dublin Corporation are awaiting details of the course from the student in question.

Dublin Corporation has also confirmed to officials of my Department that the student in question is entitled to a grant, subject to the course being approved.
