Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Investigation of Killing in Kenya.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

52 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the current position on the investigation into the killing of a person (details supplied) in Kenya; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14621/97]

A Kenyan policeman has been charged with the murder of this person earlier this year.

I am aware of the concern of the family and friends of the deceased that the circumstances of his death may not be fully investigated. Holding an inquest seems to be the best way properly to clarify those circumstances.

I have written recently to the Kenyan Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation endorsing the wish of the family and others that all the facts relating to the death be fully clarified and supporting a request to the Kenyan authorities that an inquest be held as soon as possible.
