Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Job Creation.

Nora Owen

Question:

111 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of new jobs announced for each of the months from January to September 1997. [14877/97]

The number of new jobs announced on behalf of the three industrial development agencies under my Department's aegis for the period January to September 1997 is as follows.

I draw the Deputy's attention to the fact that not all jobs approved are announced, due to a variety of factors including issues of commercial confidentiality. Ultimately the real test is actual jobs, not announcements.

In acknowledging the past and continuing excellent performance of the agencies in promoting business development and job creation, this is only one dimension of the economy-wide job creation picture. Small and medium sized services businesses continue to contribute very significantly to additional jobs. I am confident that the agencies and the economy generally will continue to perform strongly on the job creation front.
