Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Art Research Project.

Pat Carey

Question:

185 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the purpose of the evaluation of the report entitled Public Art Research Project on the per cent for art schemes; the cost of this report; and the action, if any, it is proposed to take in relation to the recommendations contained therein. [15618/97]

The Public Art Research Project report was published on 24 June 1997. The aim of the project was to facilitate the more effective promotion of art in the public sector by developing a strategy which furthers the commissioning of art in a variety of sectors, in particular by public authorities. The project specifically focused on the per cent for art schemes administered by the Department of the Environment and the Office of Public Works, and examined them in the context of contemporary visual arts practice generally. The cost of the report, including the services of consultants was £38,600. This was jointly funded by the members of the steering group overseeing the project. The recommendations that are specifically relevant to my Department have been implemented. Implementation of other recommendations that are relevant to more than one Department will be the responsibility of an inter-departmental public art co-ordination group. This group will be led by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands.
