Question:

195 Ms Hanafin asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of appointments made to boards or bodies under the aegis of his Department between 1 May 1997 and 26 June 1997; the names of the appointees; the boards to which they were appointed; and the number of board vacancies which remained vacant after 26 June, but which could have been filled prior to 26 June. [15566/97]

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 193 and 195 together.

The statutory agencies operating under the aegis of my Department are the Combat Poverty Agency, the Pensions Board and the National Social Service Board.

No appointments were made to the Pensions Board or to the National Social Service Board between the dates specified.

The Pensions Board is appointed for a period of five years, up until 20 December 2000. The National Social Service Board is appointed for a three year period and its membership will fall to be reviewed in September 1998.

Three appointments were made to the board of the Combat Poverty Agency in June 1997. The appointments are as follows:

Term of Appointment

Mr. Brian Kenny

05/06/97 — 04/06/2000

Mr. Feargus Ó Raghallaigh

25/06/97 — 24/06/2000

Mr. Liam Barrett

26/06/97 — 25/06/2000

Under the terms of the Combat Poverty Agency Act, 1986 the number of members of the board of the Agency, at any one time, shall not be less than eight and not more than 16. The current membership is 13. Members of the board are appointed by the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs, for a period not exceeding three years.
Appointments to the board of the agency are made on a staggered basis, the majority of which will expire in July 1999. The terms of appointment of two members recently expired in September 1997.
