Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Library.

Enda Kenny

Question:

213 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals, if any, she has for the future expansion of the National Library; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15734/97]

: The National Library holds one of the largest and most important national collections of manuscripts, maps, prints and drawings, photographs, microfilms and newspapers in the country. In order to meet the requirements of these collections in terms of specialised care, storage and the provision of reading facilities, a number of developments, apart from the recent opening of the refurbished and redecorated Reading Room, are planned at the National Library.

Plans are at an advanced stage for the opening, following refurbishment by the Office of Public Works, of a new technical services building at the rear of the National Library.

In addition, the Library's photographic collections will be transferred later this year to new premises at Meeting House Square, Temple Bar. This building includes a large exhibition space, specialised storage facilities as well as office accommodation.

The service provided at the Library's main building in Kildare Street is under review. Particular attention is being paid to the possibility of extending the opening hours and to the scope of introducing new admission and other procedures to assist those wishing to use the Library's services.

In the longer term, it is intended that the adjacent building occupied at present by the National College of Art and Design will also be converted for Library use. The possibility of providing further storage and other facilities for the National Library in conjunction with the Office of Public Works as well as the possible provision of a Library shop and cafe are also being considered.
