Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Dick Roche

Question:

224 Mr. Roche asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of Garda Síochána based in each Garda station in County Wicklow in each of the years from 1988 to date in 1997; and the current plans, if any, there are to increase the number of personnel in any of the stations. [15610/97]

: The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas. They have informed me that County Wicklow is policed by three Garda divisions. The southern portion of the county is policed by gardaí from the Wexford division, the western portion is policed by gardaí from the Carlow-Kildare Garda division and the remainder of the county is policed by the DMA Eastern division.

However, they have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about providing the type of detailed information sought by the Deputy on grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally. I propose, therefore, to provide the Deputy with the information on a divisional basis for the period 31 December 1988 to 31 August 1997.

Strength figures for the DMA Eastern division pre-1992 are not available in the above format.
The Garda authorities have assured me that as additional personnel become available for allocation the needs of the three divisions with responsibility for policing County Wicklow will be considered in conjunction with the needs of all other Garda districts and divisions.
