Question:

251 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary schools in County Offaly which have applied for remedial teaching services and are still awaiting them; the name and roll number of each school and its date of application for a remedial teacher; when he will appoint teachers to cover these schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15422/97]

: I propose to take Questions Nos. 250 and 251 together.

There are 68 primary schools in County Laois, of which 16 schools do not currently have a remedial teacher service.

There are 68 primary schools in County Offaly, of which seven schools do not currently have a remedial teacher service.

Particulars of the 23 schools in question are as follows. Details of whether each of these schools applied for a remedial service and the dates of any such applications are not immediately available in my Department but will be communicated to the Deputy as soon as possible.

In March 1997, the outgoing Minister for Education agreed staffing arrangements for primary schools for the 1997-98 school year with the Irish National Teachers' Organisation.

These agreed arrangements were based on the allocation of surplus posts available for redistribution from the demographic dividend for the 1997-98 school year and included the allocation of 51 remedial teacher posts to primary schools with effect from September 1997. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need for remedial tuition.

I am at present reviewing provision across the special needs area, including current responses to remedial needs, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible.

I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the schools to which he refers will be fully considered in the context of any additional allocation of special supports which may be undertaken.
