Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

256 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science whether physical education will become an examination subject at leaving certificate level; the arrangements, if any, which he has put in place to introduce physical education as a subject; if so, the timescale involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15479/97]

: Physical education is currently a non-examination subject on the junior certificate and leaving certificate.

An aspect of physical education is currently provided within the leaving certificate applied programme for examination under the leisure studies module.

Proposals to undertake a pilot project in physical education at junior cycle are being actively considered by my Department. The project will address the issue of assessment in physical education.

This project will inform decision making on the development of an effective programme of physical education at leaving certificate and the appropriate timescale for implementing any proposed changes.
