Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Dan Neville

Question:

273 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science when it is proposed to construct extra classrooms at a school (details supplied) in County Limerick in view of the unacceptable condition of the 20 year old prefabricated classrooms which are creating unacceptable conditions for teachers and pupils. [15594/97]

: The Department provided the school with grant aid towards repairs to the prefabs. I understand that this work was completed recently. In light of this there are no immediate proposals to replace the prefabricated accommodation with permanent classrooms. The matter will be considered in the context of future capital allocations.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

274 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make the necessary funds available to provide replacement accommodation for the existing prefabricated classrooms at Lixnaw boys primary school, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15595/97]

: The manager of Lixnaw boys primary school, County Kerry, applied to my Department for grant assistance towards the cost of replacing existing prefabricated accommodation at the school.

Following investigation of the case by my Department's planning section it emerged that there is spare classroom accommodation available at the nearby girls primary school. The former manager of the girls school indicated his agreement to make this spare accommodation available to the boys school.

My Department is not in a position to approve funding for classroom accommodation where sufficient accommodation already exists in the area. The school manager was advised of the position in February 1997.
