Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kuwaiti Prisoners.

John Bruton

Question:

83 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the steps, if any, he will take by means of representations to the appropriate authorities to have the Kuwaiti prisoners of war in Iraq returned home. [15760/97]

I am gravely concerned at the silence surrounding the fate of more than 600 Kuwaiti nationals who were apparently taken to Iraq before the conclusion of the Gulf war in 1991. I have instructed that my Department should actively explore this matter with our European Union partners to see what action can be taken in the context of Security Council resolution 687 which specifically addresses this issue.
