Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shannon Airport Development.

Brendan Daly

Question:

90 Mr. Daly asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will make a statement on the proposals for infrastructural investment in Shannon airport; and the plans, if any, she has to further develop services and facilities at the airport. [15632/97]

In August 1996, a multi-annual development programme costing £28.5 million at Shannon Airport over the period 1996-2001 was approved.

Some £23.5 million of this relates to a major rationalisation and expansion of the passenger terminal. The main element of the programme is the refurbishment of the existing arrivals concourse and a major extension of the arrivals building which will house departures and provide a larger arrivals area.

The remainder of the development relates mainly to a new approach road and relocation of coach, taxi and car hire parking facilities.

I understand from Aer Rianta that work on the capital development programme is progressing satisfactorily. The programme is subject to regular review in the light of traffic and other developments. The first annual review of the programme is currently under way and is expected to be completed shortly.

The policy of my Department is to actively encourage and welcome new services on all routes to and from Ireland. The question of whether any airline wishes to exercise traffic rights available to them is a matter for the airline on the basis of its own commercial judgment.
