Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Compensation Payments.

Ivan Yates

Question:

103 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when moneys due under the BSE compensation payment for heifers will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford; the moneys which are due under the scheme; and the reason for the delay in issuing payment. [15303/97]

It is a condition of the scheme that producers who apply for grants on more than 15 animals must submit documentary proof that all of the animals applied on were in their ownership and possession prior to 20 March 1996.

The persons named did not submit the necessary proof with the application but, following a request for same from the district livestock office, a letter was received on their behalf from another person confirming that the animals in question had been purchased from him in September/October 1995. However, only one of the 58 animals was found in a full BTE test of the herd of the persons named which was carried out on 6 January 1996. This suggests that 57 of the animals applied on were not in the ownership and possession of the applicants at the time indicated by them. For this reason, BSE compensation can be paid only on the one animal found in the herd of the persons named before 20 March 1996. This payment will be made within the week.

Michael Noonan

Question:

104 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when compensation will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick in respect of a depopulation arising from an outbreak of brucellosis on his farm; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15346/97]

Compensation payments due to the person in question will be processed shortly. No compenation payments will be paid for animals moved without the permission of the district veterinary office onto his holding during periods of restriction.
