Question:

107 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of tons and value of intervention beef which will be available for distribution to various charities and other groups and persons in the community during each of the months from October to December 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15381/97]

The value and tonnage of intervention beef which will be made available for charities and other groups during each of the months from October to December 1997 will be approximately 17 tonnes per month with a value of £62,788. The total estimated value for the period will be £188,364.

This beef is allocated in frozen form for use in hostel dinners run by designated charities. In addition, my Department cans beef and arranges for its distribution through designated charities such as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. It is anticipated that more than 100 tonnes of canned intervention beef will be made available through such organisations during the remainder of 1997.
