Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dental Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

135 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason schools, other than national schools, are not covered for dental treatment under the Health Act, 1970; and if he will examine this anomaly with a view to amending the Health Act, 1970, to allow schools, other than national schools, to be included in the free dental scheme. [16195/97]

Under section 67 of the 1970 Health Act the children eligible for health board dental services are pre-school and national school children in respect of defects noted at child health examinations.

There is provision under section 66 (3) of the Act for a health board, at its discretion, to provide child health examinations to children attending a school which is not a national school.
