Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Suicide Levels.

John Bruton

Question:

142 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will undertake a study on the reasons for the increased level of suicide among young people, particularly young males. [16265/97]

The Health Strategy — Shaping a Healthier Future published in 1994 expressed concern about the increase in the rate of suicide. In November 1995 a National Task Force on Suicide was established to address the growing prevalence of this tragedy in our society. In September 1996, the task force published its interim report. It contained a detailed analysis of statistics relating to suicide and attempted suicide in Ireland and a preliminary analysis into the factors that could be associated with suicidal behaviour. It identified young males aged between 15 and 24 as a suicide risk group.

The final report of the task force, which will contain a national suicide prevention/reduction strategy, is at an advanced stage of preparation and will be published shortly. A key feature of the strategy will be the establishment of a suicide research group to research all aspects of the incidence of suicide.
