277 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will list all schools included in the Breaking the Cycle initiative; and the advantages to the individual schools arising from their inclusion in respect of staff, extra grants and other resources in each case. [16475/97]

A total of 33 urban schools and 123 rural schools are included in the Breaking the Cycle pilot project. A list of the schools in question is attached.

Targeted programmes of special supports have been made available to the schools in question as follows:

Urban Schools

Extra staff to allow a maximum pupil teacher ratio of 15:1 in all junior classes; special funding of up to £3,000 for materials and equipment; special funding of up to £4,000 for out of school activities; services of a co-ordinator who oversees the project; special targeted incareer development for school staff; and schools in the urban dimension are already in receipt of enhanced capitation funding of £30 per pupil by virtue of their having disadvantaged status.

Rural Schools.

Special funding of up to £1,000 for materials and equipment; special funding of up to £1,000 for suitable local initiatives aimed at combating disadvantage; special targeted incareer development for school staff; enhanced capitation funding of £30 per pupil and rural schools are grouped into 25 clusters, each of which is served by a locally based co-ordinator.
