Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tenant Purchase Scheme.

Michael Creed

Question:

24 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will amend the terms of the tenant purchase scheme to facilitate the maximum number of tenants who wish to purchase their local authority house. [16140/97]

I am satisfied that the 1995 tenant purchase scheme, which, compared with the 1993 scheme, provides for increased discounts and gives tenants the option of purchasing their houses under shared ownership arrangements, is, generally, working satisfactorily. There were 2,284 sales completed under the scheme in 1996 and 1,023 in the first six months of this year, a level of activity well in excess of that of preceding years. Accordingly, I have no proposals at present to amend the terms of the present scheme.
