Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Harbour Works.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

68 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need to repair and extend the slipway at Castletownshend, County Cork; and whether he will approve the necessary funding for that purpose. [16128/97]

The pier and slipway at Castletownshend, County Cork, are owned by Cork County Council and responsibility for their repair and maintenance rests with the local authority.

The Department of the Marine and Natural Resources provides aid for development works at fishery harbours. Unfortunately, funding for such works is limited and has to be focused in the main on a small number of strategic harbours. It is unlikely, therefore, that aid can be provided for works at Castletownshend in the immediate future. The matter will, however, be kept under review, having regard to available funds.
