Vol. 482 No. 4

Written Answers - Defence Forces Motor Vehicles.

Ivor Callely

Question:

81 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the total number of motor vehicles in the armed forces; the average age of the motor vehicles; if his attention has been drawn to the need for replacement vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18318/97]

The total number of troop-carrying vehicles held by the Permanent Defence Force is 979 and their average age is five and a half years. There is an ongoing policy of vehicle replacement based on the most economical service life of the vehicles.

Substantial provision is made each year in the Defence Vote for the replacement of obsolete vehicles.
