Vol. 482 No. 4

Written Answers - Adult Literacy Survey.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

109 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science whether an OECD report has been, or will be published, in relation to a survey which has found that 40 per cent of Irish people have literacy problems; the measures, if any, he proposes to take on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18298/97]

My Department published a report on the results of an Irish National Adult Literacy Survey on Tuesday, 28 October 1997. I am arranging for a copy to be placed in the Oireachtas Library.

The report's finding that nearly 25 per cent of respondents were at the lowest level of literacy is a cause of concern.

The resourcing of the adult literacy service is presently under review. As an initial measure, an additional £250,000 has been made available for immediate use.

A Green Paper on adult education, which is in course of preparation, will address the implications of the survey.
