Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Wind Generated Electricity.

Ivan Yates

Question:

125 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the Government's policy regarding wind energy utilisation for the generation of electricity; and the estimates or targets, if any, the Government have for the growth of this source of power generation over the next ten years. [18573/97]

The Government is committed to the development of wind generated electricity. A target of 90 megawatts of additional electrical generating capacity from wind energy has been set for the period 1997-99. This capacity will be secured through the third Alternative Energy Requirement competition, AER III, which is currently under way. A longer term target of an additional 300 megawatts from wind energy has been set for the period 2000-10.
