239 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to provide assistance, financial or otherwise, to small abattoir owners to fully implement EU Directive 91/497; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19113/97]

I have no plans at present to introduce national aid for modernising small abattoirs. The Irish Butchers Association has made a submission on me on this and other matters and I am meeting the association this afternoon to discuss their concerns.
