Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Animal Cloning.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

288 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health and Children the administrative controls, if any, there are on research into the cloning of animals; if so, if this research is currently taking place; the animal models being used in this regard; and, if no research is currently taking place, whether he will authorise it. [18653/97]

Ethics committees are in place in institutions using live animals for research purposes. I am advised that no research of the type referred to involving live animals is currently taking place. I recognise that areas of assisted reproduction and related research require separate examination and careful consideration is being given as to how best this might be carried out.
