Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

367 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 230 of 7 October 1997, if he will give details of the ratio of gardaí to population in the three areas specified; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18734/97]

As I outlined in my answer to Parliamentary Question No. 230 of 7 October 1997, the detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. I understand that in determining the level of resources required by each Garda division and district they take into consideration a number of factors which would affect the level of personnel required in each area. These include crime trends, population, demographic change etc. The Garda authorities have provided me with the information sought by the Deputy on a district basis for the three areas concerned. These details are based on the 1991 census of population and the personnel strengths on 31-9-1997 for each of the Garda districts responsible for policing the areas in question.
