Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Third Level Sports Facilities.

Bernard Allen

Question:

391 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the investigations, if any, his Department has carried out into the sporting needs and opportunities of people in third level education. [18751/97]

Overall responsibility for sport facilities in third level education would be the responsibility for the Department of Education and Science, and the HEA. I understand that the Irish Sports Council had discussions with the Higher Education Authority (HEA) on the sporting needs of third level colleges. Since then I understand that the Higher Education Authority issued guidelines on student support services to all third level institutions. The Sports Council and officials of my Department are available to advise the Higher Education Authority and the Department of Education and Science on any further proposals they may have in this whole area.
