Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Capitation Grants.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

473 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science whether he has received representations on behalf of Tallaght Deanery primary schools regarding their difficulties with the low level of primary school pupil capitation grant; the steps, if any, he intends to take to deal with the serious issues raised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19065/97]

I can confirm that I have recently received representations on behalf of primary schools in Tallaght concerning the present level of capitation grants and I am fully aware of the ongoing demands for increased funding from primary level schools in general. In line with the commitments made in An Action Programme for the Millennium, I remain committed to giving primary education a clear priority in allocating resources. In the context of the Estimates for 1998, I am currently considering how best to fulfil the Government's commitment in this regard.
