Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - State Company Restructuring.

Jack Wall

Question:

43 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the action, if any, she has taken to restructure semi-State companies as multinational enterprises; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18983/97]

I recognise that, in the case of some of the commercial State companies, transformation and restructuring are needed to respond to liberalisation, increased competition, the needs of customers and to contribute to national competitiveness. I will respond to restructuring proposals which are made to me by the companies in a manner which is consistent with Government policy as set out in An Action Programme for the Millennium.

I recognise that several State companies have already developed overseas activities including Aer Rianta, ESB, Telecom Éireann and An Post. I am pleased that this type of activity on the part of State companies is growing and I will continue to encourage and facilitate it.
