Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Compensation for Fishermen.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

80 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the measures, if any, which will he take to compensate the Dingle fishermen in County Kerry who have lost over one million pounds this season and who are facing financial ruin as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18850/97]

The information available to my Department suggests that Dingle fishing port has performed well so far this year. Indeed preliminary estimates indicate that the overall value of fish landings at Dingle for the first nine months of this year has increased by up to 20 per cent compared with the same period in 1996. I should add that no request for compensation has been received from the Dingle fishing industry.
