Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Middle East Peace Process.

Michael Creed

Question:

86 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has communicated Government dissatisfaction to the Israeli authorities regarding their aggressive settlement policy. [18840/97]

The Government views the policy of the Israeli Government of deliberately expanding settlements in Jerusalem and other parts of the Occupied Territories as amounting to a clear and dangerous obstacle to the Middle East peace process. In accordance with this view, we joined the overwhelming majority of the members of the United Nations at an emergency special session of the General Assembly in July when the assembly, among other things, condemned the position of the Israeli Government in failing to comply with an earlier resolution of the assembly on this issue, and reiterated its demands for a full cessation of Israeli settlement activities.

The Government has communicated its dissatisfaction to the Israeli authorities in this context on several occasions and we will continue to do so at all appropriate junctures.
