Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Development of State Companies.

Ivan Yates

Question:

109 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the steps, if any, she has taken to encourage semi-State companies to grow overseas; and her policy in this regard. [18556/97]

The Government's policy in relation to development of the State companies is clearly set out in the Government's Action Programme for the Millennium. It is a policy which takes a very pragmatic approach to the development of these companies. Specifically, "Our aim is to have growing, vigorous, healthy companies, serving the public well, giving high quality employment at home and abroad, regardless of any evolution in structure".

State companies are fully aware of Government policy in this respect and a number of them are involved in overseas commercial activities, including consultancy work. It is clear that the interest in such activities is escalating and I welcome this. Cases where my approval is required e.g. to set up subsidiaries or to acquire shares are dealt with on a case by case basis.
