Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Car Registrations.

Michael Ring

Question:

150 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance the number of cars registered in each of the years from 1993 to date in 1997; and if he will give a breakdown of ownership numbers for each county. [19576/97]

I would like to inform the Deputy that, in reply to written Question No. 69 on 23 October 1997, I gave details of the total number of cars registered in each of the counties during the years from 1993 to 1996, inclusive. As indicated in that reply, similar information for 1997 will not be available until early 1998. I will arrange for that information to be sent directly to the Deputy.

The information furnished relates to the county where the declared registered owner resided at the time of registration. The Office of the Revenue Commissioners does not record details of changes in ownership which arise after cars have been licensed by the Department of the Environment and Local Government for road tax purposes. However, details of the total number of cars licensed in each licensing authority area, including those first registered prior to 1993, are contained in the Irish Bulletin of Vehicle and Driver Statistics which is published annually by the Department of the Environment and Local Government. The latest publication refers to the year 1996 and is available in the Dáil Library.
