Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Darndale Remedial Works Scheme.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

189 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will re-examine the proposal to refurbish the pilot phase of the Darndale remedial works scheme in the light of the recent resubmission from the housing department of Dublin Corporation and in view of the fact that serious mistakes were made at that time regarding laneways and so on; and if he will support funding for a new commercial social centre of Darndale-Belcamp parish. [19478/97]

Under the remedial works scheme, funding is provided to assist local authorities to carry out major essential works of a structural nature to houses in designated housing estates. Some £18 million has been paid to date to Dublin Corporation in respect of work to houses in Darndale Estate. Work under phase 1 of the estate was completed in 1988. Where the works proposed by a local authority in respect of a scheme or a phase of a scheme have been completed, funding under the RWS is not provided for the carrying out of further work at a later date and the corporation has been so advised. It is a matter for a local authority to fund any extra work it wishes to have carried out from its own resources for the upkeep and management of its housing stock. In relation to the funding of a social centre, communal facilities on a limited scale may be funded, as part of the overall refurbishment of a housing estate, under the remedial works scheme where the facilities are required to assist authorities in implementing improved management and maintenance arrangements in the estate, including increased levels of tenant participation. Funding would be confined to facilities owned and managed by the local authority.
