Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Radio Network.

Liam Burke

Question:

247 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself with the overall Garda radio network in Cork city in view of some adverse public comments made about the efficacy of the network, particularly in relation to the quality of reception on the beat and in relation to gardaí on the beat who are desirous to make contact with colleagues in other areas of the city; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19371/97]

I am informed that the Cork system operates on a group basis where each user is assigned to a particular group. There is direct communication between members of the same group. Where members wish to talk to colleagues outside their particular group the assistance of operators in the Cork city communications centre is required. It may be this element of the design which is giving rise to perceived inadequacies. I understand that the whole system is under continuous assessment by Garda telecommunications staff and the suppliers and adjustments are being made as required.
