Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Murder and Manslaughter Figures.

Jim Higgins

Question:

253 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of deaths involving violence which were, or are, the subject of Garda inquiries; the number of these deaths in which charges were, or are, being pressed for each month in 1997 and to date for the month of November 1997; and if he will give details of those figures for each month in 1995 and 1996. [19577/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information requested by the Deputy is as set out in the following table.

I understand that the provisional figures for 1997 indicate that there has been a decrease in the incidence of murders so far this year as compared to the corresponding period last year. I am informed that criminal proceedings are recorded as having commenced in respect of 32 cases in 1995 and 31 cases in 1996. It is not possible to indicate whether charges are being considered in respect of any cases which are currently the subject of Garda investigations.
