Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Naturalisation Scheme.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

255 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the previous nationality of a person (details supplied) who applied for and was granted naturalisation under the investment based naturalisation scheme in 1988; whether this person complied in full with the criteria established by the Government decision of December 1988; and if not, the way in which this person did not comply with these criteria. [19683/97]

Notice of issue of certificates of naturalisation is published in the prescribed manner in Iris Oifigiúil in accordance with the provisions of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1956. This has been done in respect of all applications for naturalisation up to the end of 1996, including those naturalised under the investment-based scheme. The prescribed manner does not provide for a reference to the previous nationality of persons naturalised and I do not propose to depart from the statutory provisions.

As I informed the Deputy recently, the Government has asked me to bring forward a report on the general issue of the future of the investment-based scheme. As part of that exercise, the criteria followed in each case is being examined. That report is being finalised at present and my aim is to be in a position to bring it to Government soon.
