Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Richard Bruton

Question:

267 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the current fees payable when a student sits one subject in the leaving certificate in one year and the other subjects the following year in view of the fact that they are currently treated in the same way as if the student was sitting a full set of exams each year. [19303/97]

I presume the Deputy is referring to the position of students entered for the examination as external candidates as distinct from those entered by the authorities of second level schools. The fee structure for external candidates is intended to facilitate students who wish to take one or more subjects at different sittings while at the same time ensuring that the fees paid by such students are consistent with those paid by a student who may repeat the examination while attending a second level school. The structure is reviewed periodically and will be reviewed again for the 1999 examinations.

If the Deputy is aware of a particular case where the existing structure places an external student at a relative disadvantage my Department will be glad to consider the matter fully if provided with details of the case.
