Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Army Band.

Paul McGrath

Question:

92 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Defence if members of the Army band of the Western Command based at Custume Barracks, Athlone, County Westmeath availed of the voluntary early retirement package available to Defence Forces personnel; the plans, if any, he has to replace those with soldiers with comparable music talents; and if he will make a statement regarding the future of this Army band. [19690/97]

Eight members of the band of the Western Command retired from the Permanent Defence Force in accordance with the terms of the voluntary early retirement scheme. I have been assured by the military authorities that the number of personnel assigned to the School of Music, which includes the bands, in the new organisation and structure of the Defence Forces is sufficient to meet the requirements of the school.
