A total of £1.7 million was made available to my Department in respect of 1997 to assist local authorities in carrying out their statutory functions under the Abattoirs Act, 1988. This funding was allocated among the local authorities on the basis of the number of abattoirs operating within each of their functional areas. Payment to local authorities is subject to my Department being satisfied that a full service has been provided in the relevant period.
