Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Traffic Regulations.

Richard Bruton

Question:

301 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the discussions, if any, he has had with the local authorities in Dublin or with the Garda traffic authorities regarding the proposed ban on the parking of heavy goods vehicles in residential areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21223/97]

The Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations, 1997, empower road authorities to prohibit the parking of large vehicles in specified areas.

My Department consulted the Garda Síochána and a number of local authorities, including Dublin Corporation, prior to making these regulations and provided briefing for local authorities before the regulations came into force. However, neither I nor my Department have discussed in detail with the Garda Síochána or any local authority the application of parking controls on large vehicles in particular situations. The imposition of any ban for heavy goods vehicles would be a matter for the individual local authorities.
