Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Review of Legislation.

Question:

415 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of the scope of the legislative changes, if any, he plans to introduce to embody the concept of zero tolerance in law. [21546/97]

The concept of zero tolerance will be central to the major criminal law reform programme which I have under way at present. In this context I would refer to the recently published Criminal Justice Bill, 1997, which includes measures relating to minimum mandatory sentences in drug trafficking cases, speedier trials and automatic asset inquiries.

Other proposals for legislative change will be announced in the usual way in due course.
