Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Insurance.

Pat Carey

Question:

460 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether it is necessary that parents (details supplied) in Dublin 11 be asked to take out extra personal accident insurance to cover certain claims; whether the standard insurance policies taken out by boards of management of primary schools, no doubt with advice from his Department, are regarded as adequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20948/97]

It is the responsibility of the managerial authorities of primary schools to put in place adequate insurance cover on school property and to take out public liability insurance. My Department has informed schools that this responsibility rests solely with the board of management. In the case referred to by the Deputy, the school has the normal public liability insurance for schools. An insurance company has offered pupils the option of taking out additional insurance which will provide cover additional to that provided by the school's public liability insurance. Whether the offer made by the company is availed of is entirely a matter for the parents concerned.
