Question:

481 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the subhead of his Department's vote from which the £1 million which he recently announced to equip and furnish a new information technology building at Cork Regional Technical College will be provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21135/97]

Funding for the acquisition of furniture and equipment for the new information technology facility at Cork Regional Technical College is being made available from subhead L1 of Vote 29 (Third Level and Further Education).

Question:

482 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proportion of grants provided in the 1998 Estimates in respect of the running costs of regional technical colleges; the institutes of technology and certain vocational educational committee colleges to be set aside for development at Waterford Institute of Technology; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21136/97]

The abridged Estimates which have been published recently do not generally represent the total planned provision for public expenditure. It is normal practice for the Government to review and adjust the expenditure provisions in the context of finalising the budget and in the light of more up-to-date outturn figures. Moreover, the Estimates provisions are only the first stage in the process of determining sepcific allocations, improvements and initiatives across all sectors of education.

No specific allocations have been determined for 1998 for individual colleges in the technological sector. The allocation for Waterford Institute of Technology will be considered in the context of the on-going discussions with the institute and its 1998 programmes and budget submissions.
