Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Seán Doherty

Question:

506 Mr. Doherty asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether the gymnasium at the Convent of Mercy secondary school, Roscommon, County Roscommon, is a danger to the health and safety of the students and many other groups who use it in view of its poor structural condition. [21466/97]

I wish to point out that it is the responsibility of the school authorities, in the first instance, to ensure the health and safety of students and teachers. As the Deputy is aware an application for grant assistance towards repairs to the gymnasium at the Convent of Mercy secondary school, Roscommon, has been received in my Department. Unfortunately, due to the limited capital finances available it has not been possible to proceed with these works to date.

The Deputy can be assured that the project will continue to be reviewed in light of available resources and competing priorities.
