Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Employment Equality Legislation.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

42 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to introduce legislation to combat ageism in company recruitment following recent developments in our EU partners; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18358/97]

The Employment Equality Bill, 1997, which was published yesterday, prohibits discrimination in employment on a range of grounds, including the ground of age. The legislation will apply to both public and private sector employments and, when enacted, will place Ireland among the most advanced EU member states in tackling ageism in employment.
