Vol. 484 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sports Anti-Doping Advisory Committee.

Monica Barnes

Question:

46 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received a report from the Sports Anti-Doping Advisory Committee set up earlier in 1997; the discussions, if any, he has had with this committee and with his Northern Ireland counterpart on the issue of blood testing; and if he intends to introduce legislation to support the anti-dope testing programme. [21279/97]

The Sports Anti-Doping Advisory Committee was established under the Irish Sports Council in June 1997, and, as the Deputy will be aware, includes a representative of the Northern Ireland Sports Council. The chairman made a courtesy call to me in September but I have not met the committee and do not intend to do so in advance of the submission of its findings.

The committee is at present finalising its report which will incorporate recommendations on developing and implementing a sports anti-doping policy for Ireland. When the report is completed and submitted to me, which I expect shortly, I will make contact with my Northern Ireland counterpart to discuss any recommendations which might have an all-Ireland dimension.
