Vol. 484 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tourism Development.

Dick Spring

Question:

50 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation his views on the greatest potential area for growth in terms of tourists' countries of origin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21511/97]

Overall responsibility for the promotion and development of Irish tourism in overseas markets rests with Bord Fáilte as part of its day-to-day operational activities.

I am advised by the board that the countries of origin with the greatest potential for visitor growth include Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the USA, as identified under the marketing sub-programme of the Tourism Operational Programme, 1994-99, and Australia. These markets together account for 85 per cent of Ireland's tourists and are fully recognised as having significant potential for growth. Other opportunity markets include Spain, Belgium, Switzerland and Scandinavia.
